Capitalizing on the slim form factor and energy savings potential, the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in LCD monitor panels is growing rapidly. Although the desktop monitor market is mature, panel makers and brands are working together to develop new features such as slimness and lower power consumption to rejuvenate the sector. Panel makers are using LED backlights in mainstream monitor sizes such as 18.5”W, 19”W, 22”W, and 23”W/24”W. Although LED backlight penetration in monitor panels was only 1.4% in Q3’09, current panel maker plans indicate that the penetration could reach 22% in Q3’10, assuming adoption by brands.

According to DisplaySearch’s latest Quarterly LED & CCFL Backlight Report, InnoLux was the leading supplier of LED backlit monitor panels in Q3’09, with 34.4% of unit shipments (Table 1). Other panel makers producing such panels include LG Display, AUO, Samsung and CMO. Brands like Samsung, Dell, LG, Acer, Lenovo, BenQ and AOC began launching LED backlit LCD monitors ranging from 18.5”W to 24”W in Q3’09. In Q1’10, 20”W, 23.6”W and 27”W panels will enter the market. In addition, there are small LCD TV sizes such as 26”W that are adapting monitor panels, the LED backlight is also brining the attractions to this segment. TV brands like Vizio are promoting 18.5”W and 23”W LCD TV using LED backlit monitor panels, and more brands are expected to join in 2010.

At a meeting with investors and financial analysts today, Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) will update the market on progress at the company’s Healthcare sector. Executives at Philips Healthcare, including sector Chief Executive Officer and member of the Philips Board of Management Steve Rusckowski, will elaborate on the fundamental strengths of Philips’ Healthcare business and will discuss the long-term growth and profitability drivers that give Philips a uniquely strong position going forward.

“While certain factors, both economic and political, clearly influence short-term performance I am fundamentally confident of the success chances of our Healthcare business in the long run.” Mr. Rusckowski commented. “Our world is facing some inescapable challenges in the medium-to-long term. We have come a long way already in building up the Healthcare portfolio needed to face those challenges. This, coupled with our leading business positions and our differentiating approach in general, positions us well for the future, despite the short-term headwind we face today.”

During today’s meeting, several Healthcare executives will discuss the fundamental drivers and positioning of their respective businesses. For instance, the chief executive of Home Healthcare Solutions will discuss how ever-more pressing challenges like overburdened healthcare systems and ageing populations will lead to out-of-hospital medical treatment and patient monitoring becoming an increasingly important element in the Healthcare mix. He will elaborate on how Philips is excellently positioned to benefit from this trend, while providing sensible solutions to some of the key healthcare challenges of our time.

Other executives will cover a range of relevant topics, including progress made in building out the business in key emerging economies such as China, India and Latin America by making strategic acquisitions, expanding service businesses and extending the product offering. There will also be a session dedicated to Philips’ holistic care-cycle approach to Healthcare and how it gives the business a strong competitive edge. Steve Rusckowski will also discuss how, despite some short-term negative trends, the fundamentals of the business remain strong.

During the day, analysts will also be given more insight into Philips Healthcare’s efforts to tackle the short-term impact of the current economic slowdown through a strong focus on cost and cash management and ensuring that maximum value is captured from recent acquisitions. Philips will also provide an update on restructuring and cost reduction measures for Healthcare, which are now expected to result in total savings of EUR 150 million for 2009.

The head of McDonald’s restaurants in Hong Kong was convicted Wednesday of conspiracy after taking over $300,000 in bribes from a Thai company that supplied corn to the fast food chain, authorities said.
Lau Si-sing, 49, McDonald’s former managing director, was also found guilty of pressuring the unidentified Thai company to lie to investigators, according to Hong Kong’s anti-graf agency, the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Lau was accused of asking an executive at the food supplier to pay him illegal kickbacks equal to some 10 percent of the sales amount of corn provided to McDonald’s outlets in Hong Kong, officials said.
Between 2005 and 2007, he accepted some 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars ($320,000) from the supplier, deposited to his and his wife’s bank accounts.
McDonald’s said Lau has been fired.
«McDonald’s does not tolerate criminal wrongdoing, or breaches of its code of conduct for employees,» the company said in a statement.
Lau joined the fast food giant in Los Angeles in 1983, according to an earlier press release on the company’s Web site.

He was the managing director of McDonald’s in the Philippines for three years before taking up the top post in Hong Kong in May 2004. Lau also spent 10 years expanding McDonald’s business in mainland China.
McDonald’s, headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, operates more than 200 restaurants and employs more than 10,000 people in Hong Kong, according to its Web site.

Lau, who faces fines and jail time when he’s sentenced next month, was convicted of two conspiracy charges. He was acquitted of a bribery offense.

AMD (NYSE: AMD) extended the value and lifespan of its heralded Dragon platform technology today with five new additions to its AMD Phenom™ II processor family, including the industry’s only 45nm triple-core processors and three new AMD Phenom II quad-core processors. These AMD Phenom II processors deliver choice and lay the foundation for memory transition; they fit in either AM2+ or AM3 sockets and support DDR2 or next generation DDR3 memory technology. AMD continues to enhance the Dragon platform technology value to OEM and channel partners as well as Do-It-Yourself (DIY) consumers who build and customize their own PCs.

With a substantial performance boost over the previous generation of AMD Phenom processors, new AMD Phenom II processors deliver an amazing experience at mainstream price points and can help eliminate the substantial cost required by competing platforms which force an immediate upgrade to DDR3 memory. AMD’s strategic architecture design lets consumers customize a PC upgrade path that’s right for their budget and overall experience without being forced to pay substantial amounts of money to upgrade their motherboard and memory technology.

“Whether buying a new desktop PC or upgrading components in an existing system, AMD recognizes consumers are looking for value more than ever before,” said Leslie Sobon, vice president of product marketing, AMD. “With the combination of the infrastructure compatibility and the introduction of the AMD Phenom II triple-core processors, AMD has made two very strategic design decisions that our competitor cannot duplicate at the component or platform level.”

“PC buyers are looking to leverage their technology investments as much as possible in these challenging economic times,” said Bob O’Donnell, IDC vice president, Clients and Displays. “Companies that can provide solutions that help offer strong performance and flexibility at attractive price points are clearly going to be at an advantage.”

Extending Triple-Core Innovation
All things being equal, it is an established fact that three cores offer more performance than two, but not as much as four. Typically, the cost of cores would scale in a linear fashion. But what if you could get triple-core performance at a price competitive with dual-core systems? This is the market need that AMD Phenom II triple-core processors have filled. First introduced at 65nm, these new 45nm AMD Phenom II triple-core processors deliver the improvements over the previous generation AMD Phenom processors exhibited by all AMD 45nm desktop processors: better energy efficiency, improved idle power consumption and incredible headroom for tunable performance.1 AMD continues to deliver competitive and affordable solutions addressing the diverse needs of customers and consumers; whether dual-, triple- or quad-core, AMD can provide a platform-level solution that exceeds expectations – all at a competitive price.

Platform Compatibility
When upgrading desktop PCs, the design compatibility of the new AMD Phenom II processors will allow consumers to keep their existing microprocessor technology across AM2+ and AM3 infrastructures. That means AMD Phenom II processors work equally well with either DDR2 or DDR3 memory, allowing customers to choose if and when they wish to upgrade. AMD customers and partners will be able to take advantage of its innovative multi-core technology and experience a compelling solution, especially when combined with AMD’s chipset and graphics processors.

Pricing and Availability
The new triple-core and quad-core AMD Phenom II processors are available immediately at the following frequencies:

AMD Phenom™ II X4 910 – (2.6GHz)

AMD Phenom™ II X4 810 – (2.6GHz)

AMD Phenom™ II X4 805 – (2.5GHz)

AMD Phenom™ II X3 720 Black Edition – (2.8GHz)

AMD Phenom™ II X3 710 – (2.6GHz)

The triple-core AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition processor is competitively priced at $145 while the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor is priced at $165; the AMD processor allows users to get more cores for less money. The quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 810 processor (2.6GHz) is priced at $175 compared to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor (2.33GHz) at $170.2

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Centennial Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:CYCL) today announced that AT&T plans to acquire Centennial, a regional provider of wireless and wired communications services, for $944 million in cash. The transaction will enhance AT&T’s wireless coverage for customers in largely rural areas of the Midwest and Southeast United States and in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With the addition of Centennial’s wired network in Puerto Rico, AT&T will also be able to better serve the company’s business customers who operate there.

As a result of the acquisition, Centennial’s 1.1 million wireless subscribers — many of them in rural areas — will have access to the wireless network with the best global coverage and to the nation’s premier lineup of innovative wireless devices, including iPhone 3G, an AT&T exclusive. Centennial’s customers who choose select smartphones — such as the BlackBerry® BoldTM, another AT&T exclusive — and AT&T LaptopConnect cards will also enjoy free access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network.

“Mobility is a vital investment area for AT&T and our company’s biggest growth driver,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “This transaction enhances network coverage for our consumer and business customers and is expected to create long-term value for AT&T’s stockholders.”

“This acquisition offers important benefits for wireless customers of both AT&T and Centennial,” de la Vega said. “Our existing customers will enjoy a better on-network calling experience in the current Centennial roaming areas. And Centennial customers will have access to a mobile-to-mobile network of nearly 75 million subscribers, AT&T’s national and international roaming capabilities, our terrific device offerings and our great portfolio of applications and services.”

The Centennial acquisition demonstrates AT&T’s commitment to continuously enhance network quality and coverage for its wireless customers. The addition of Centennial’s high-quality 850 MHz spectrum will improve service quality for AT&T customers in parts of Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio and Texas.

Centennial also provides switched voice and high-capacity data and Internet Protocol solutions for business customers in Puerto Rico. The transaction gives AT&T a network presence in Puerto Rico and will allow the company to better serve its multinational business customers with a presence in this U.S. territory.

“Centennial has a 20-year history of doing what is best for our customers, and this transaction is a natural next step for us,“ said Michael J. Small, CEO of Centennial. “As a result of this merger, our wireless customers will enjoy greatly expanded network coverage and access to AT&T’s wide range of innovative products and services. Our business customers will benefit from AT&T’s expertise in delivering networking services and solutions to businesses of all sizes.

“I thank our associates for their dedication and hard work in always rising to the challenges of our rapidly changing industry, and I take pride that our company will become part of a world-class organization like AT&T.“

Under terms of the agreement, Centennial stockholders will receive $8.50 per share for a total equity price of $944 million. Including net debt, the total enterprise value is approximately $2.8 billion. AT&T expects the proposed transaction to deliver significant value to its stockholders. The acquisition offers opportunities for synergies in areas including corporate overhead, advertising, customer care and network operations. In the first year after the transaction closes, AT&T expects minimal dilution to EPS and cash flow, driven by upfront integration costs.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval, the approval of Centennial’s stockholders and other customary closing conditions. Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, Centennial’s largest stockholder, has agreed to vote in support of this transaction. AT&T is working to obtain approvals by the end of the second quarter of 2009.

Centennial’s 1.1 million wireless customers are in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as well as in Kalamazoo, Cass City, Newaygo, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Jackson, Roscommon, Allegan, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon and Saginaw-Bay City, Mich.; Miami, Kosciusko, Huntington, Kokomo, Muncie, Anderson and Lafayette, Ind.; Lima and Findlay-Tiffin and Williams County, Ohio; Lafayette, Alexandria, Iberville, Bastrop and Lake Charles and Caldwell, West Feliciana, Beauregard and DeSoto parishes, La.; Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas; and Claiborne and Copiah counties, Miss.
